Course components/units/outline:
At AS, candidates will be introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques. At A2, candidates are required to build upon the knowledge, understanding and skills gained in the AS with greater depth of study.
How is this course assessed?
AS Unit 1: Portfolio = 50% of total AS / 25% of total A level marks. Candidates choose either Fine Art, 3D Design or Textiles for study throughout AS.
Unit 2: Externally-Set Assignment = 50% of total AS marks / 25% of total A Level marks. 5 hours of supervised time. Candidates select one of five starting points and produce preparatory work and a finished piece or pieces.
A2 Unit 3: Coursework – Personal Investigation = 25% of total A level marks. Candidates are required to develop a personal investigation based on an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by 1000 - 3000 words.
Unit 4: Externally-Set Assignment = 25% of total A level marks. 15 hours of supervised time. Candidates select from several starting points and produce preparatory work and a finished piece or pieces.
Where could this course lead?
AS/A Level Art and Design is a good starting point for entering employment in areas such as Graphic Design, Media, Retail, Shop fitting, Advertising etc and is an essential requirement for further study at university in any Art and Design discipline.

Additional information
Students should bring a selection of their GCSE Art and Design coursework for interview prior to being accepted on the course. Students must be prepared to put in extra time on top of their timetabled sessions in order to succeed in this subject.
